Buying sports gear can be confusing. There are dozens of brands, every sport has its own rules, and the right choice for a seven-year-old is very different from the right choice for a college player. GearUp Guide exists to make that first step easier.

How it works

Choose your sport and your level of play. We show you the gear you need, organized into three groups:

• Essential: the items you need to play safely and by the rules.
• Recommended: gear that noticeably improves comfort, safety or performance.
• Optional: extras that dedicated players often add.

Open any item to compare several options from different brands and models, labeled Budget, Mid-Range or Premium so you can pick what fits your budget.

What to keep in mind

• Prices are approximate estimates and change often. Always check the retailer for current pricing.
• Models are updated regularly. If a specific model is unavailable, a similar one from the same brand is usually a good substitute.
• We don't claim to have personally tested every product listed. Treat our guides as a starting point and follow your league's equipment rules, especially for helmets and other protective gear.
